Jean E. Gordnier Becker “The Hat Lady”

Jean E.Gordnier Becker, age 88, of New Castle, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Henry County Hospital. She was born July 3, 1920 in New Castle, Indiana to the late William Fairbanks and Gladys Leora (McVey) Gordnier.

Jean graduated in 1938 from New Castle High School. In 1940 Jean and Stanley Becker opened the first Becker’s Clover Farm Grocery at 709 S. 21st Street in New Castle. In the following years they opened Becker Brothers’ Master Market on “A” Avenue, and later a second store on State Road 3. After her divorce in 1977 she worked for Lazarus Stores until retiring in 1992. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Castle, Girl Scouts, Sorosis Club, Spoon and Thimble Home Economics Club, and Give and Take Class. She was an avid reader and enjoyed reading Vanity Fair magazine and two newspapers until a few weeks ago. She adored her grandsons and great grandchildren. Family, friends and work were her passion. Jean never left the house without a hat and was known to have hundreds of hats in her “hat room”.

Jean’s life motto was, “You can live in a small town but you don’t have to have a small mind.”

Survivors include a daughter: Freida (husband: Paul) Hasek of St. Louis, MO; grandsons: Anthony (wife: Beth) Hasek of St. Louis and Austin (wife: Erin) of New York City; great grandchildren: Madeline, Ella and Aiden Hasek of St. Louis, MO. A special thanks goes to her personal caregiver, Tonia Wills and the staff at the Woodlands.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother: Bill Gordnier.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with the Reverend Tom McGilliard officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be given to the Jean E. Gordnier Becker Fund c/o Henry County Community Foundation, the First United Methodist Church of New Castle or Girl Scouts of America with envelopes available at the funeral home.
