Jerry A. Hardgrove Sr., age 77, of rural Mooreland, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2011 after an extended illness, at Henry County Hospital. He was born December 11, 1933 in New Castle, the son of Henry E. and Grace (Means) Hardgrove.
At the age of 17, he served in the United States Army in the Korean War. He was a member of the 541st Airborne Division. After returning from Korea he was employed with Delco Remy in Anderson. He owned and operated Jerry’s Restaurant in Mt. Summit. He had worked at the New Castle State Hospital and retired from Dana Corporation after 22 years of service. He loved playing golf, wood working, painting and traveling. Jerry was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of 45 years; children, Jerry A. (wife, Alta) Hardgrove of New Castle, Sherry (husband, Jimmy) Cotner of Mooreland, Pam (husband, Tony) Abshire of New Castle, Rick (wife, Debbie) Pierce of New Castle, and Larry (wife, Dona) Pierce of Dayton, OH; twenty one grandchildren; forty two great grandchildren; a sister, Beverly (husband, Darrell) Thurston of New Castle; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sons, Anthony and Andrew Hardgrove and Robert Pierce; a brother, Henry Hardgrove.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 26, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Herchel Watson officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
