Joe S. Cross, age 72, of New Castle, went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 2, 2012 at his residence. He was born May 17, 1940 in Clinton County, Albany, Kentucky to the late James Perry and Laura Mae (Smith) Cross.
He had worked at Diamond Containers-Smurfit Box Factory for many years before retiring. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and of the CB Club and went by Slim Jim and also Knifeman. He was an avid fisherman and loved watching NASCAR, basketball and football. He played horseshoes back in the day and won many tournaments. He also loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lola Cross; four children, Kathy Cross-Hurst, Sharon Cross-Slover, Vickie Cross (husband, Johnny) Clayborn and James William (Billy) Cross all of New Castle; a sister, Lida Sullivan-Neal of New Castle; two brothers, David Cross of New Castle and Billy Cross of Lynwood, CA; two step-sisters, Maida Wallace and Cora Walls both of Albany, KY; grandchildren, Pamela (companion, Tony) Sutton of New Castle, Andy (wife, Kim) Hurst of Fort Wayne, IN, Christy (husband, Jason) Hooper of New Castle, Michael Paul Slover (companion, Renee) of Fort Knox, KY, Jonathon Cross of Indianapolis, IN and Kasandra Cross of New Castle; great grandchildren, Derek, Darren and Laurissa Sutton, Masson and Morgan Slover, Dylan and Nathan Lowery, Isaac and Alysha Hurst; many, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Perry Cross in 1976 and Laure Mae Smith-Cross in 1951; step mom, Myra Kempton-Cross; three brothers, John L. Cross, Kendrick Cross and Elmer Cross; six sisters, Wilma Dalton, Patsy Britt, Imogene Goldy, Lucy McGill, Maylene Melton and Artie Thrasher.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Brother Bobby Slagle officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Memory Gardens.
