John D. Abston, 88, of New Castle, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017 at his residence. He was born February 16, 1929 in Albany, KY a son of the late Richard and Fannie (Summers) Abston.
John retired from Chrysler Corp. in March of 1989 after 30 years of service. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946-1949 and was a Corporal at the time of his discharge. He served with 3rd ERS, and 5th A.F. in Korea and Japan. He formerly attended Eastside United Brethren in Christ Church where he served as music/song director and later attended Chicago Corner Church. John was an avid mandolinist and was passionate about playing gospel music for God. He also played in numerous revivals, churches and nursing homes.
He is survived by a daughter: Sherry Abston of New Castle; two grandchildren: Joe Briner and Amy Smith, both of New Castle; three great grandchildren: Dominic, Victoria and Alec Smith; three sisters-in-law: Ann Turner, Susan Wilson and Janice Ford; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Abston; second wife, Pat Abston; granddaughter, Jennifer Briner; brothers, Floyd, Frank and James Abston; sisters, Mary Harvey, Lucy Pugh, Grace Gibson, Ruby Abston, Myrtie Franklin and Cora Ferguson.
Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.
