John R. Duncan

July 21, 1925 — March 20, 2010

John R. Duncan, age 84, of New Castle, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 20, 2010 at his residence. He was born July 21, 1925 in Monticello, Kentucky to the late James Rankin and Effie (Shearer) Duncan.

John belonged to a farming family. He worked at his father’s lumber company which eventually brought him to New Castle. He worked at Vance’s Service Station and Restaurant, and then owned his own service station. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in Europe. John retired from New Castle Community School Corporation after many years of service.

John attended First Assembly of God in New Castle, and enjoyed spending time with his family. An avid gardener, he spent his last day working in his yard, which he loved. John enjoyed working with wood and making different items to give as gifts. He was known for the birdhouses he crafted.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 63 years, whom he married March 5, 1947, Betty H. (Barrier) Duncan of New Castle; four children, Karen (husband, Tim) Preble of New Castle, Debbi Alderson of Evansville, Jenni (husband, Rex) Current of New Castle, John Duncan of Seymour, grandchildren, Tom (wife, Michelle) Preble, Kate Preble (fiance, Gary Studt), Mary (husband, Ryan) Higgins, Margaret (husband, Josh) Richardson, Carrissa Current, Caraline Current, Aaron Alderson, Adam Alderson, Jonathan (wife, Theresa) Duncan, eight great grandchildren and ninth soon too arrive, sister, Hazel Back of New Castle, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Violet Moore and Jean Elam.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Stephen Gallaway officiating. Friends may call from 5 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled Veterans of America with envelopes available at the funeral home.
