John W. Hanning, 84, of New Castle, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020 at The Waters of New Castle following a brief illness. He was born December 15, 1935 in New Castle, a son of the late Harold R. and Ruth E. (Chambers) Hanning.
A 1955 graduate of New Castle High School, John worked at Chrysler Corp. in New Castle for 15 years, and retired from the New Castle State Developmental Center in 1996 following 21 years of service. He then worked at Walmart in New Castle for 10 years.
A very outgoing person, John loved kids, and served as a crossing guard at Sunnyside Elementary School for several years. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was a lover of dogs. He had attended the First Apostolic Church for several years and in the 1970’s was an active member of the Henry County R.E.A.C.T. In the past several years, he very much enjoyed volunteering at God’s Grain Bin in New Castle.
He is survived by a daughter, Wanda J. “Jody” Hanning of New Castle; five step-daughters, Anna Ruth (Dwain) Brown, New Castle, Mary Sue Gregory and Linda L. Fleetwood, both of Ocala, FL, Rosa M. Kendrick and Dee (J.L.) Sims, both of Leonard, TX; two step-sons, Gary Kendrick of Vero Beach, FL and Larry R. (Susan) Kendrick of Indianapolis. Grandchildren, Daniel Bridgeman of Indianapolis, Sean Bridgeman of New Castle, David (Marcella) Brown, Kevin (Cindy) Brown and Andy Brown, all of New Castle, Steve (Jana) Gregory of Arlington, TX, Julie (Randy) Faulkner of Franklin, Mark (Gina) Gregory of Ocala, FL, Nathan (Cyndee) Fleetwood and Natalie Burge, both of Beaumont, TX, Stacie (Ian) Simmons of Syracuse, IN, Adam Farmer of Goshen, Joshua (Samantha) Kendrick of Brownsburg, Jessica (Andy) Mastin of Rushville, Keith (Abigail) Kendrick, Kraig (Krista) Kendrick, and Kevin (Sarah) Kendrick, all of Indianapolis, and Aaron Kendrick of Goshen; thirty great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Also, two nephews, Tony (Leann) Hill of New Castle, and their daughter, Laura, Troy (Brenda) Hill of Murfreesboro, TN, and their sons, Derek and Trey; a niece, Amy Hanning of Ft. Wayne.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary E. Hanning; a sister, Beverly J. Hill, and a brother, Dale Hanning.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at First Apostolic Church in New Castle with Pastor Jeff Emmitt and grandsons Rev.’s David Brown and Nathan Fleetwood officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., Wednesday at the church, prior to the funeral.
