John Riley Paul

August 23, 1925 — February 26, 2011

John Riley Paul, 85, of New Castle, Indiana, passed away in Brown County, Indiana on February 26, 2011 after an extended illness.
John was born in Henry County on August 23, 1925 to Ivan and Berniece Paul. After graduation from New Castle High School, John entered the Navy (during World War II) as a gunner’s mate and was stationed in the South Pacific. All the children enjoyed hearing the war stories that he shared thru the years.
John owned and operated the Newby-Paul Motor Company with his father, Ivan, and brother, Bill, for many years. Newby-Paul was a Chrysler Dealership and Service Center located at 1550 E. Broad Street and the family also owned the adjoining Maytag appliance/Schwinn bicycle store. Today the Arts Park garden is located in that spot for many to enjoy. John was an active member of the community and in the First Friends Church.
John married Mary Iris Hodgin in 1944. The Hodgin family owned and operated Hodgin Electric, an electrical contracting company. John and Iris loved antiques and after retirement, they spent their time collecting , restoring, and selling antiques at Webb Antique Mall in Centerville. John was very handy refinishing the pieces that Iris so carefully selected.
John is survived by his son, Stephen (Connie) Paul of Nashville, son, Chris Paul of Ft. Wayne, and daughter, Lisa Stackhouse of Columbus. He was a wonderful grandfather to Mark Paul (Cara) of Carmel, Amy Paul (Mandy) of Camby, Eric Paul (Tricia) of Indianapolis, Andrew Stackhouse (Natalie) of Michigan, Brian Stackhouse (Columbus), Stefanie Stackhouse (Jon Stafford) of Brown County, and Christy Tofflemoyer (Matt) of Ft. Wayne in addition to 16 great grandchildren; brothers, William Paul (Joan) of New Castle, Andrew Paul (Elaine) of Florida, and Jackie Hounchell (Robert) of Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris; parents , Ivan and Bernice Paul and brother David Paul.
Memorial Services will be on April 2nd , 10:30 AM at First Friends Church in New Castle with Reverend Phil King officiating.
