John M. Schmidt, 82, of Carthage, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at his residence, after a long battle with Alzheimers Disease. He was born September 14, 1930 in Indianapolis the son of Maurice J. and Elizabeth (Hubert) Schmidt.
John had lived in rural Rush County since 1963. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean Conflict. A graduate of Southport High School, he also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. John retired from Naval Avionics after 28 years of service as an electrical engineer on the Polaris, Posidon and Trident missile programs. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventists Church and the Central Indiana Bicycling Association.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife: Penelope Alexander Schmidt of Carthage; two daughters: Anita Jackson of Indianapolis and Valerie (Tom) O’Laughlin of New Carlisle; six sons: Kevin (Janeice) Schmidt of Anderson, Eric (Pam) Schmidt of Danville, Brian Schmidt of Indianapolis, Marvin (Hiromi) Schmidt of Sammamish, WA, Rodney (Jena) Schmidt of Knightstown, Gordon Schmidt of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild; two step children: Joshua (Kim) Bousum of Kokomo and Misty (Ron) Booher of Noblesville; six step grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Hubert Schmidt.
Services will be at 3:00 PM Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Richard Byrd officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Knightstown American Legion Post #152. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-3 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
