Judith Ann (Capshaw) VanMatre
Judy was born April, 13, 1929, in Bedford, Indiana. She was the daughter of Vernie J. (Jack) Capshaw and Clara (Hosek) Capshaw. A son, Kurt (wife Liz), of Richmond, TX survives Judy. She had two grandchildren, Tyler, of Anderson, IN and Kayt, of Cambridge City, IN, and two step-grandchildren, Lauren and Andrew of Richmond, TX. Two great-grandchildren also survive Judy, Madison Fowler and Kassie VanMatre. She is preceded in death by her husband James E. VanMatre, who died in May 2000, a brother James D. Capshaw who died in 1945 in Germany while serving in World War II, and her parents.
Judith was a graduate of New Castle High School, where she served as the secretary of her class. She was a graduate of Ball State University, receiving Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority.
Judy was a retired elementary school teacher. She taught at Hernly, Greenstreet, Weir, and Eastwood in the New Castle Community School District before retiring in 1983.
Judy enjoyed spending time with her family, attending New Castle High School and Purdue University football and basketball games. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing Bridge and socializing with her friends.
Judy was a member of several clubs and organizations including: First United Methodist Church, Honorary Member of Psi Iota Ki sorority, Lydia Circle, Order of Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and Chapter AD of PEO Sisterhood. She volunteered at the Henry County Memorial Hospital Gift Shop and at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2014 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Tom McGilliard officiating. Burial will be in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
