Leroy Dickerson

October 11, 1920 — January 2, 2011

Leroy Dickerson, age 90 of Georgia, formerly of Muncie, passed away Monday, January 3, 2011. He was born October 11, 1920 in Henry County, Indiana to the late Vernon and Marie (Sumpter) Dickerson.

He attended New Castle High School and had worked at Dickerson’s Transfer, A & P Grocery, Marsh Grocery,
L J Stone Company and retired from New Castle State
Developmental Center. He served in the United States Army during WWII and participated in Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes campaigns. He was a member of the New Castle Historical Society and Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Deanna (husband, Bob) Jones of Muncie, Michael(wife, Carol) Dickerson of Canton, GA, Claudia (husband, Darold) Keith of Gulfport, MS, Gregory (wife, Tina) Dickerson of New Castle, Cheryl Verhaagh of
Ft. Myers, FL and Lisa Dickerson of New Castle; sixteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; brothers, Tommy (wife, Jeanette) Dickerson of Knightstown and Jim (wife, Janice) Dickerson of New Castle; sisters, Betty Benson, Virginia Lee, Mary (husband, Richard) Dudley all of New Castle; and Linda Dials of Rochester, IN; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen (Lucas) Dickerson; a brother, Ted Dickerson; sister-in-law, Ruth Dickerson; and brothers-in-law, Sam Lee and John Benson.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 at the funeral home. Services were also held in Canton, GA on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Darby Huey Funeral Home.
