Linda “Kay” Phelps, 78, of New Castle passed away Monday, April 15, 2024 at Henry Community Health. She was born July 5, 1945 in New Castle to the late William and Vonnie (Hurst) South.
Kay was a graduate of Knightstown High School and attended Ivy Tech. She served as director of the Latch Key Program at Tri Elementary School for several years and also worked at many local businesses. Kay was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene where she was the Links Missionary Correspondent. She was also a former member of Greensboro Church of the Nazarene for 30 years where she served as a Sunday school treasurer, Sunday school teacher and Bible school teacher. Kay was an Avon representative for several years. She had crocheted hundreds of hats for children and assisted with many funeral dinners. Kay enjoyed quilting, reading, playing scrabble, gardening, sewing and traveling, both at home and abroad.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Stanton Ray Phelps, whom she married May 29, 1965; two sons, Brian Ray Phelps of Shelbyville and Nathan Edwards Phelps of Greenwood; grandchildren, Noah Lee Phelps and Ryder Elliot Phelps; brother, Clyde South of Knightstown; sister-in-law, Sue South of Connersville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Mildred (Jim) Cox, Christina (George) Neel, Doris (Gary) Barr and Wayne South.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2024 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastors Jonathan Morgan and Aaron Green officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Friday, prior to the service.
