Lloyd Shaffer

October 7, 1924 — December 3, 2013

Lloyd Shaffer, 89, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Heritage House of New Castle. He was born October 7, 1924 in Messick, a son of Guy M. and Zola Grace (Hedrick) Shaffer.

He was 1942 graduate of New Castle High School, where he played point guard and served as captain of the Trojan basketball team. Lloyd spent most of his life in New Castle other than short time in Brandon, FL. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during WWII in the anti-aircraft large gun battalion. He was employed at New Castle Bridge Company and New Castle Welding as a draftsman for many years. Lloyd was a lifetime member of The Church of Christ, serving as an elder for many years, and his current membership was with the 240 East 200 N congregation. He was an avid Trojans, Pacers and IU basketball fan. He enjoyed woodworking, building and flying model airplanes, gardening and flowers, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel (Back) Shaffer, whom he married in March 2011, two sons: Steven (Darlene) Shaffer of Salt Springs, FL and Scott (Nena) Shaffer of New Castle; two daughters: Sally (Shaffer) Hardwick of New Castle and Sandra (John) Hayes of Bradenton, FL; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two step daughters: Marilyn (Don) Cross of New Lisbon and Brenda Poor of New Castle; step son: David (Nancy) Back of Louisville, KY; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years: Constance Lucille (Connie) Shaffer in 2000; three brothers: Kenneth and Harry Shaffer and a brother in infancy; a sister: Lois Hall.

Services will be at 1:00 PM Friday, December 6, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Evangelist Phil Morgan and Elder Robert Caudill officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hillsboro Cemetery Association, c/o Gene Clark 2293 N Hillsboro Rd. New Castle, IN 47362.
