Lois Ruth (White) Shields -- Long Time Educator

Lois Ruth Shields, 85, of Carthage, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield following a short illness. She was born February 2, 1924 in Rush County the daughter of Fred Burr and Ethel Henley (Publow) White.

She was Valedictorian of the Class of 1942 at Carthage Normal School. She graduated from Purdue University in 1946 and received her Masters Degree in 1976. She was a school teacher in Mays, Carthage, and Knightstown where she taught Chemistry and Home Economics. She was a 4-H leader for 30 years with The Ripley Needletwisters, a member of the Hancock County Genealogical Society, the Common Threads Quilt Guild, Knightstown Sewing Circle and Carthage Literary Circle. She was a past board member of Riverside Cemetery and currently attended Raysville Friends Meeting. She helped computerize the obituary index for The Knightstown Banner for years 1908 to 2000.

Lois Ruth is survived by four children: Pennina (Phil) McMullen of Carthage; Charles Shields of Powder Springs, GA; Charity (Tony) Maxwell of Greenfield; Howard (Sonna) Shields of Greenville, OH; five grandchildren: Amanda (Jacob M.) Lund of Tipp City, OH; Tony (Emily) Maxwell, Jr. of Moberly, MO; Tommy Maxwell attending Purdue University; Brian (Amber) Rosales of Fargo, ND; Shavon Rosales of Orlando, FL; three great grandchildren: Jacob, Hannah and Emily; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Thomas H. Shields whom she married November 12, 1948 at Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting; a sister: Margaret Perisho; two brothers: Edgar and Joseph White.

Services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 14 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Monday, April 13, 2009. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.hinsey-brown.com .
