Dr. Loren C. Fitzhugh

Dr. Loren C. Fitzhugh, 91, of New Castle, passed away Sunday at Glen Oaks Health Campus following an extended illness. He was born October 16, 1924 in Kansas City, MO, a son of the late Lorenzo Dow and Lula May (O’Shea) Fitzhugh.

Dr. Fitzhugh received his Bachelor and Master’s of Arts Degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He then received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Purdue University in June 1958. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II.

His professional career included serving as Clinical Psychologist II at a State Hospital in St. Joseph, MO, Veterans Hospital in Marion, IN, Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis, as well as serving as Graduate Assistant at Purdue University Adult Clinic. Most of his career, however, was at the New Castle State Hospital. He served as Director of Psychology Department from 1968, as well as Assistant Superintendent from 1975 until his retirement in 1985 respectively. He had also served as Consultant, School Psychologist at Blue River Valley School Corporation from 1969-1976.
Professional memberships include, the American Psychological Association, American Association for Mental Deficiency (past President), Council for Exceptional Children, Indiana Psychological Association (past President), Indiana State Teachers Association, Society of Sigma XI, and was listed in the American Men of Science. Civic Organizations included Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission, Governor’s Council on the Arts, Audubon Society, Indianapolis Art Association, First Nighters, Inc. (past President), Muncie Civic Theatre, and Ball State Shoestring Theater, Hancock/Henry Counties Community Action Program (Past President), and after retirement was head of New Castle Counseling Center at the Byrket Center and also Interim Director of Bennett House.

Dr. Fitzhugh was on adjunct faculty of the Psychology Departments at Ball State University, Indiana University-Indianapolis, and Earlham Regional Extension Center. He also had authored many publications in books and periodicals including The Fitzhugh Plus Series Workbooks.

He is survived by his wife, Jill (Horseman) Fitzhugh of New Castle; nieces and nephew, Philip (Gail) Burns, Houston, TX, Jan (J. T.) House, Springfield, MO, Nancy Goebel, St. Louis, MO and Charlene Fitzhugh, Kansas City, MO.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Goebel and Dorothy Burns; and four brothers, John, Chester, Paul, Don Fitzhugh, and one nephew, Don Charles Fitzhugh.

At his request, there will be no public visitation or services. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle.
