Louis Karst

Louis Marvin Karst, age 94, of Hagerstown, Indiana, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Henry County Hospital. He was born February 5, 1916, in Morgantown, Indiana to the late Roscoe E. and Marie E. (Smith) Karst.

Louis married his wife, Anna Mary Karst, in 1939 and they have been together for the past 70 years. He retired form Eli Lilly following several years of service and was formerly employed by Allison Engineering Company. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during WWII. He was jack of all trades and took pride in his yard and cars and making improvements to his home. In his high school years he made the first five on the basketball team and won the State CCC Camp State basketball team after high school. Louis was a thirty second degree mason and a member of Masonic Lodge #715 Englewood Lodge in Indianapolis, Scottish Rite and the American Legion. Louis especially took pride in taking care of his family as he helped and cared for several family members through the years. Louis’s favorite quote was “Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who kept on trying when there seemed no hope at all.”

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Anna Mary (Miester) Karst of Hagerstown; his children, Mary Ann Pollard of Hagerstown and Shirley Fitzgerald of New Castle; grandchildren, Matt (wife, Lori) Fitzgerald of Muncie, Shalette Farmer of BelleFontaine, OH, Julie Kindig of Indianapolis, Shane (wife, Linda) Pollard of Phoenix, AZ; six great grandchildren; brother, Ronald Karst of Speedway, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Douglas, Alan and Roscoe C. Karst, Jr.; sons-in-law, Chamler Pollard and D. Ted Fitzgerald, Jr.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will follow in Evangelical Union Cemetery in Sunman, IN. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor’s choice with envelopes available at the funeral home.
