Lowell C. Painter

October 5, 1918 — January 3, 2016

Lowell C. Painter, 97, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Henry County Hospital following a very brief illness. He was born at home on October 5, 1918 to Floyd and Ethel (Applegate) Painter.

After Lowell graduated from Spiceland High School in 1936, he went to work at Spiceland Grain and Coal until it was acquired by Henry County Farm Bureau, where he then became the Spiceland Branch Manager. Lowell was an honorable man, and the farmers knew that. He conducted business for many years with a handshake, and would have “settlement” day, when the farmers would all settle up after selling their crops. Farmers from neighboring towns would choose to conduct business with Lowell, even when it meant driving further. When the Spiceland Elevator closed, he became the County Farm Bureau Oil Manager, from which he retired in the late 1970s.

Lowell was a charter member, and very instrumental in the founding of the Spiceland Lion’s Club. He served several terms as President, as well as treasurer for many years. He enjoyed working at Spiceland Freedom Days for many years, and was extremely active in the Club for many years. He was a life-long member, and the longest living member of Spiceland Friends Meeting where he had served in several capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Ministry and Oversight Committee, and the church choir. He was a member of the Spiceland Alumni Association, and enjoyed acting in the skits for their annual program.

A life-long horseman, Lowell enjoyed restoring his grandfathers sleigh and buggy, and he loved hitching them up for rides. He was a woodworker and a collector.

He married his high school sweetheart, Eileen Stubbs on December 24, 1941. They enjoyed 40 years of marriage until she passed away in 1981. He then married Marguerite Clark Green in 1985, and she passed away in August, 2015, just short of their 30th wedding anniversary.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a son, John (Cindy) Painter of Ft. Wayne, a daughter, Janet (Darrell) Craft of Spiceland; four grandchildren, Jonathon (Julie) Painter of Ft. Wayne, Lindsay (Thomas) Marcinko of Fishers, Mike (Jenny) Craft, and Patrick (Stacey) Craft, both of Spiceland; ten great grandchildren, Macy and Lauren Painter, Ashley and Tyler Marcinko, Wesley, Taylor, Chandler, Ross, Ryan and Trace Craft.

In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell Painter.

Visitation will be from 12:-00 p.m. noon to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Spiceland Friends Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the church with David Brock and Cathy Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland.
