Marcella (Sally) Cannon, 98, of New Castle passed away on September 13 after a long illness at a nursing home in Brazil, IN. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Cannon, in 2008. The couple met and were married in New Mexico in 1943, where Jim served with the US Army and Sally, an Oklahoma native, was a civilian aircraft communicator and weather observer.
Sally leaves behind two children: Ron Cannon (wife Janet) of Rockville, and Sandy Cannon-Brown (husband Omer Brown) of Martha’s Vineyard; two grandchildren: Shane Cannon (wife Sommer) of Springport and Veronica Cannon Collins of Pendleton, and four great grandchildren: Dillon and Kylie Cannon and Andrew and Brody Collins. She also is survived by her sister-in-law Jean Cannon of New Castle.
Sally worked as the office manager for Dr. Phyllis Grant in New Castle for 26 years before her retirement in 1990. A talented musician, Sally played the organ and sang in the choir, which she sometimes directed, at St. James Episcopal Church. She is the last survivor of a bridge club that met weekly for more than 50 years. Sally loved gardening and the ocean, enjoying yearly trips to Florida with her husband and later with her children.
Sally was dearly beloved - not only by her family, but by everyone who knew her for her sense of humor and generous heart.
She will be remembered in a memorial service on Saturday, September 24th at 10:30 a.m. at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle burial will follow at St. Anne Cemetery.
