Mark E. Carpenter, age 61, of Springport, passed away Monday, April 2, 2012 in Ball Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born September 26, 1950 in New Castle, IN, a son of the late James Forrest and Margaret (Lannerd) Carpenter.
A 1969 graduate of Lincoln High School in Cambridge City, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2009 following over 40 years of service. During his tenure there, he served as mail carrier in Cambridge City until he was appointed Postmaster of Kennard from 1980-1990, and then served as Postmaster of Ridgeville from 1990-2009, when he retired.
Mark was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist, receiving numerous awards and holding various offices in many conservation organizations, most recently serving as treasurer of the East Central Indiana Pheasants Forever Chapter. Mark was a member of the Masonic Lodge #5 in Cambridge City; past member of the Kennard Lions Club, and had been a member of various postal organizations.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of over 39 years, Nelda (Nead) Carpenter of Springport; a son, J. Forrest (wife, Samantha) Carpenter of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Sarah and Jonathan Carpenter, both of Indianapolis; a brother, Ronald (wife, Phyllis) Carpenter of Columbia City, IN; and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Forrest and Margaret Carpenter.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, officiated by Pastor Randy Davis of Redkey United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Brick Cemetery near Hagerstown.
