Martha Anna Bennett, 84, of New Castle and formerly of Spiceland passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Glen Oaks Health Campus. She was born June 28, 1935 in Springport to the late Charles and Mary (Mauzi) McWhorter.
She and her husband, Rev. Gene Bennett pastored at Kennard, Spiceland, Southport, Carthage and Greensboro Church of the Nazarene. Martha served in the Indianapolis District Church of the Nazarene children’s department as well as missionary president. She was also a district representative for the Church of the Nazarene General Assembly Missionary Society. Martha enjoyed fishing, quilting and entertaining friends and church family in her home. She also loved singing, gardening, canning and knitting. Her main passion was ministering to children.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 68 years: Rev. Gene Bennett; two sons: Larry (Dawn) Bennett and Danny (Vickie) Bennett of New Castle; a daughter: Beverly (Matthew) Ferguson of New Castle; grandchildren: Lorissa (Duane) Pooley of Boise, ID, Matthew (Andrea) of Virginia, IL, Nathan (Katie) Bennett of New Castle, Trina (Jason) Jenkins of Middletown, Elizabeth (Thom) Daugherty of Carmel and Dr. Ethan Ferguson (fiancé, Dr. Bharathi Muthusamy) of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren: Alaina, Trevor and Jayden Pooley, Emma, Cole, Tye, Christina and Blu Bennett, Madilyn, Kadence and Samantha Jenkins, Marin Bennett and Beckett Daugherty; great great-grandchildren, Thomas and Nova; and several nieces & nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: George, Herbert, Everett and Delmar McWhorter; sisters: Ollie June Todd, Margie New and Mildred Hail.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2020 at Southside Church of the Nazarene in New Castle with Rev. Ray LaSalle and Rev. Randy Tooley officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle and one hour prior to the service at the church.
