Mary Mildred Masters Gratner, 84, of New Castle, passed away Friday, February 15, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 24, 1928 in New Castle the daughter of Frederick and Edith (McCormack) Kalk.
She was a 1946 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School, where she was a cheerleader of 3 years. Mary was a former dance instructor at Lou Vans Dance Studio. She worked as an operator for Indiana Bell. She received a nursing degree from Ball Memorial Hospital specializing in pediatric nursing, working for Dr. Raymond Henderson in Muncie. She and her first husband, Paul, owned and operated Masters Gravel & Excavating, Golden Pebble Beach Club, and Golden Pebble Estates & Mobile Home Sales. She was a member of Henry County Altrusa Club, Henry County Saddle Club and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved reading, dancing and camping with the family.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband: David M. Gratner; children: Gary Masters (special friend: Debbie Conrad) of Losantville, Tim (Bridgett) Masters of Etowah, NC, Terry (Latina) Masters of New Castle, Paula (Tracy) Cope of Charleston, IL; former daughter-in-law: Pamela Masters of New Castle; stepson: David D. (Marsha) Gratner of New Castle; 8 grandchildren: Derek (Mallory) Masters, of Cambridge City, Lauren (Michael) Cannon of Sylva, NC, Aubrey Masters of Etowah, NC, Wendy (Stewart) Jessie of Selma, Kristi (Wenstone) Nash of New Castle, Anna and Macee Fellers of New Carlisle, and Mary Cayten of Charleston, IL; 2 step-grandchildren: Will and Nate Cope of Charleston, IL; 5 great grandchildren; a sister: Eva (Fred) Hellmer of Muncie; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband: Paul, whom she married February 18, 1954; and 9 brothers and sisters.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle.
