Mary I. Hoots

July 8, 1923 — February 25, 2017

Mary I. Hoots, 93, of New Castle, passed away Saturday morning in the home of her daughter. She was born July 8, 1923 in Liberty (Casey County), KY, a daughter of the late Alex and Pearl (Wolfe) Aaron.

A war bride, Mary married Wayman Hoots on January 4, 1942 before he went off to war. She lived on her own for over two years, and bore their first child, Nell, while Wayman was off at war and was in a German Prison Camp. While Wayman was there, Mary became a member of the Pentecostal Church in 1944, (now First Apostolic Church) where she remained a faithful member for over 72 years. She served as Sunday School teacher and in several other capacities over the years. She was mostly known as a prayer warrior, and is responsible for winning many souls and helping them pray through.

She enjoyed cooking, and especially enjoyed cooking for others outside her family. An accomplished quilter, she was known for her very intricately detailed quilts. She loved God, her church, her Bible, and her family. Family was everything to her, and nothing made her happier than to be amongst a house-full of family.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, I. Nell Cox and Judy J. Ping, both of New Castle; five grandchildren, Rick Cox of Muncie, Marlena (Gary) Wray of Mt. Summit, Eric Ping of New Castle, Shannon (Tony) Beck of Martinsville, and Valerie Renee (Daniel) Shafer of Martinsville; great grandchildren, Andrea (Eric) Yelverton of Texarkana, AR, Ashley (Cody) Curran of San Antonio, TX, Zach Cox and Logan Cox, both of Muncie, Brad (Jordan) McClurg of New Castle, Krista (Chris) Weidert of New Castle, Ross Beck, and Aaron Beck, both of Martinsville, Stephen Shafer and Charity Shafer, both of Martinsville; a step great granddaughter, Lauren Wray of Middletown; great great grandchildren, Lincoln, Levi, Luke, and Logan Yelverton, Garrett McClurg, Kayden Curran, Aubree McClurg, Cooper and Connor Weidert, Ramsey and Riley Beck; step great-great grandson, Chasen Collins; a brother, Jack (Helen) Aaron of Albany, KY; sisters-in-law, Collene Wallace of Spiceland, Wanda Taylor of Louisville, KY, and Carla Hoots of New Castle; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 71 years, Wayman in 2013; a daughter, Patsy Jean in 1949; a son-in-law, P. Richard Cox in 2012: a step-great grandson, Chase Wray; a sister, Ruby Murphy; and five brothers, Jessee, Holland, Ted, Charlie, and Robbie Aaron.
