Mary Lines

March 22, 1918 — September 10, 2023

At the phenomenal age of 105, Mary G. Lines, of New Castle, Indiana, went to be with the Lord and reunite with loved ones who preceded her.

Left to cherish her memory are: her grandson, Jay Lines; granddaughters, Ronda (Richard) Hogland, and Renee Hinton; great grandchildren Monique, Christine, Dana, and Jody; and numerous great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Lines; son, Ronald Lines; parents, Elisha & Maude Cross; sisters, Agnes Cross Campbell, Ruby Cross Campbell, Christine Cross Kettler, Lorene Cross King; grandson, Jeff Lines; great granddaughter Hollene Williams; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Mary was born March 22, 1918, in Albany, Kentucky, to Elisha and Maude Cross. Mary and her family moved to Henry County when she was about six years of age. In her youth, the family regularly traveled from the countryside of Henry County to New Castle for staples — those journeys were in a horse-drawn carriage. She would never forget the family’s thrill when her father bought their first car. That car was a Ford Model T.

Mary attended school in Spiceland, Indiana. Always a creative and energetic person, she was one of the photo editors for the Spiceonian YearBook during her senior year. Mary was one of only nine students who attended Spiceland school for the entire 12 years! Her class of 1936 consisted of 25 graduates. At the age of 93, she attended the 75th Spiceland H.S. reunion in 2011; there were only three surviving classmates. Mary was the last surviving member of the class of 1936.

Mary met and dated Edgar Lines while she was still in high school. She graduated in May of 1936 and married Edgar that June. In October of 1938, Mary gave birth to Ronald, their only child. She enjoyed being a mother to their son and missed him terribly when he enlisted in the Air Force. When Ron and his family visited, she would regale her four grandchildren with wild stories of their dad as a kid. It was hard on her that she couldn’t live closer to her son and grandchildren. She would have loved to be able to be with all of them on a daily basis. But she managed very well to convey her love for them across the miles.

Mary worked at Modernfold in New Castle, Indiana, for decades before her retirement in 1983. She was an active member of Eastern Star and was awarded her 75-year Diamond Jewel by the Grand Matron of the Indiana Chapter of Eastern Star this past January.

Mary was an avid gardener. Her yard and home were always stunningly beautiful. Everything she touched flourished. She was happiest when she was working in her yard/garden.
