Melba Wilhoite

June 30, 1939 — September 13, 2009

Melba Ann (Bailey) Wilhoite, age 70, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Ball Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was born June 30, 1939 in Tennessee the daughter of Melton and Hannah (Summers) Bailey.

Melba lived most her life in the Muncie area and was a graduate of Cowan High School. She worked in Bracken Library at Ball State University for 10 years retiring in 1984. She was a member of Lindberg Road Church of Christ in Anderson. Melba was a devoted wife and mother.

Survivors include her husband of 25 years: Jerry Leroy Wilhoite of Yorktown; a daughter: Renee Dawn (Hoover) York of Yorktown; three grandchildren: Jason Grimes of Yorktown, Amanda Shaffer of Osceola, IN and Coltin Hale of Yorktown; son-in-law: Jon Shaffer of Osceola, IN; stepson: Scott Wilhoite, Albuquerque, NM; five sisters: Christine (husband: Ray) Jarrell, Ocala, FL, Betty (husband: Herb) Smith of Yorktown; Joyce (husband: Bill) Colvin of Connersville, Lois (husband: Bill) Schlagel of Yorktown, Cindy Taylor of Little Rock, AR; four brothers: Jim (wife: Edwina) Bailey of Murfreesboro, TN, Dewey (wife: Janice) Bailey of Arvada, CO, Joe (wife: Billie) Bailey of Murfreesboro, TN and Wayne (wife: Fran) Bailey of Murfreesboro, TN; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters: Teresa Renee Hoover and Rhonda Denise (Hoover) Shaffer.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 17, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Sam Schlagel and Tom Cloninger officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. The family will receive friends 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Lung Association and the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. with envelopes available at the funeral home.
