Melvin Oren Basey

Melvin O. Basey ,88 ½, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. He was born July 16, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Floyd and Helen Basey. 

Melvin retired from Brooks Foods after 29 years of service. He was an avid Cushman Scooter Collector and went to their shows yearly. An avid fan of I.U. basketball, Mel enjoyed bowling, genealogy, and riding his scooter. 

He is survived by his loving wife Donna K. Basey of New Castle, whom he married on December 5, 1986; son, Robert Allen (Vicki) Basey of Lebanon, IN; daughter, Donna Lou Basey of Abelin, TX; grandsons, Brain (Rachel) Basey of Westfield, IN, Chris (Emily) Basey of Indianapolis, IN; granddaughter, Jessica Basey of Sheridan, IN and his great grandchildren, Noah and Arden of Westfield, IN; step-children: Gerald Boling, Jr., Don Boling, Sharon Murali and Cathy (Joe) Jackson; several step grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Lester and Helen Mae (Ball) Basey; first wife, Anita Rose Kinder; brothers, Lester and Richard Basey. 

The family would like to give a special thank you to Henry County Hospice for caring for Melvin. 

Services will be at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Josh Robertson officiating. Burial will be at Arcadia Cemetery at later date. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in memory of Melvin.
