Merle P. “Phil†Widvey, 79, of rural Shirley passed away unexpectedly Saturday, February 14, 2009 at his residence. He was born June 11, 1929 in Henry County the son of John L. and Alice (Deck) Widvey.
A 1948 graduate of Knightstown High School, he attended Bailey Engineering School in St. Louis, MO. A veteran of the U.S. Army he served in the Korean War from 1951-1953. He retired from Allison division of General Motors. He was a member of the American Legion Post 137 and a member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church. Phil was an avid model airplane enthusiast and a fan of auto racing. He built stock cars and raced at Mt. Lawn Speedway.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years: Alta J. Bishop Widvey of Shirley; brother-in-law: Terrell V. Bishop of Wilkinson; sister-in-laws: Verlyn Wilson of Wilkinson and Violet Bishop of Indianapolis; nephews: James Michael Bishop of Indianapolis; Mark Wilson of Wilkinson; nieces: Sonya Cluttinger of Wilkinson; Dawn Fry of Greenfield; great nephews: Logan Fry of Wilkinson; Scott Babcock of Boise, ID; great niece: Kristin Babcock of Boise, ID.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Richard L. Widvey; sister: Marcella Widvey; brother-in-law: James R. Bishop; and niece: Janet Bishop Babcock.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 18 at the Knightstown United Methodist Church with Thomas Eversman officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-5 PM Tuesday, February 17 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel.
