Michael Alan Rutherford

Michael “Mike” Alan Rutherford, 69, of Westfield and formerly of New Castle passed away August 26, 2024, at his residence. He was born April 4, 1955, in Anderson, Indiana to the late Donald Rutherford and Marilyn (Miller) Huff.

Mike grew up in Michigan and graduated from Portland High School in Portland, Michigan. He graduated from Michigan State University where his longtime love for the Spartans was born. He married the love of his life, Sandy Theis, on September 17, 1976. Together, they moved to New Castle where Mike began his 31 year career teaching and coaching at New Castle Community Schools. He loved coaching basketball where he coached at every level. Through his years with New Castle, Mike had taught every grade but always said 7th grade was his favorite. Mike loved watching sports, classic television, puzzle books, listening to music and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandy Rutherford; children, Kelli (John) Servizzi; Eric (Trisha) Rutherford; grandchildren, Jenna, Nathan and Lucy Servizzi, Easton and Asher Rutherford; sister, Sharon (Steve) Martin; father-in-law, Ed Theis.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his stepfather, Rodney Huff; sister, Theresa Forbes and mother in law, JoAnn Theis.

The family requests that guests attending the visitation or service wear green and white to support Mike’s two favorite teams, the Michigan State Spartans and New Castle Trojans.

Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Paul Gearhardt officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Summit Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until the time of service.
