N. Arlen Barker, 93, of rural New Castle died Saturday evening, May 17, 2014 in Henry County Hospital. He was born October 23, 1920 in Lewis County, Kentucky, a son of the late James Corb and Bessie (King) Barker.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Arlen proudly served during World War II. A resident of Anderson until 1972, he then moved to New Castle. Arlen retired from Delco-Remy division of General Motors in Anderson after 35 years of service. He enjoyed gardening and farming and spending time with his family. A member of the Westview Church of the Nazarene for 62 years, he had recently attended First Apostolic Church in New Castle with his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Barbara Ann Barker of New Castle, whom he married February 10, 1951; two daughters, Susan (Dudley) Carender of New Castle, and Shirley (David) Smalley of New Castle and Madison; eight grandsons, Daniel G. Carender Jr., Michael W. (Christy) Carender, Bruce L. (Laura) Carender, and Robert P. Carender, all of New Castle; D. Travis (Chalon) Smalley of Carmel, Richard Arlen Smalley, Rodney Smalley, and Todd Smalley, all of New Castle; six great grandchildren, Adam Lee, Levi Michael, Abbigale, and Joshua Lee Carender, Chandra Smalley, and David James “DJ” Smalley. He is also survived by a sister, Peggy Holt of Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Vernie Porter, Lima Justice, and Gladys Hutsell; five brothers, Gobel, Clarence, Thomas, Ercel, and Ernest Barker.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor John D. Beck Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery in New Castle.
