Norman Glenn Patrick, 84, of Greenfield, passed away on September 14, 2024, at Hancock Regional Hospital. The son of Tivis and Dessie Planck Patrick, he was born in Carter County, Kentucky on February 15, 1940.
Norman graduated from Olive Hill High School in 1958 – rather miraculously despite repeated shenanigans with best friend Clyde Wilson.
For over 60 years, Norman made Indiana his home. On June 23, 1970, he married Arlene Bradshaw, originally of Russell Springs, Kentucky. He later referred to Arlene, who proceeded him in death in June 2023, as the best wife and mother anyone could ask for. And she often talked about how much he provided for and cared for his family. Together, they raised two children and resided in Knightstown for 45 years before moving to Greenfield in 2016.
Norman served in the U.S. Army, training at Fort Knox, Kentucky before travelling to California, Alaska, Japan and Seoul, Korea. He received the Army Good Conduct Medal in 1965.
Norman had a used appliance, furniture and salvage business for 50 years that brought him to know so many people in Henry County and beyond.
He was truly one of a kind, and those who knew him will smile at the description. Norman was always telling a joke, generous and protective.
Basketball was a favorite pastime: playing with friends at the courts in Knightstown or showcasing his shooting skills during a game of H-O-R-S-E in his backyard. Other joys included traveling and listening to county music legends like Hank Williams.
Norman loved a good meal and was particularly fond of his wife’s biscuits and gravy, meatloaf and chicken and dumplings.
Over the years, a few things became synonymous when picturing Norman.
He could spend hours glued to his TV shows – classic westerns and comedies were his favorites. In the last year, he also found comfort in old Billy Graham sermons.
You very rarely saw Norman outside the house without a hat. Equally reliable was his lifelong drink of choice: pop. He especially enjoyed the fountain Pepsi his niece Sharon (aka Hack) frequently would bring him.
In the last four months of his life, Norman took great pride in his great grandson Gabriel Patrick, who he called the “cutest little fella.”
He is also survived by daughter Rebecca Patrick, son Michael Patrick (Becca), brother Burgess Patrick (Bettye), grandsons Andrew Patrick (Shaylee Norfleet), who was “pa’s boy,” and Kaleb Nunley, sisters-in-law Lois Bradshaw, Sharon Bradshaw, Ramona Patrick and Virgie Patrick, much loved nephews and nieces and their families, cousins and close friends, and his beloved kitty Vivie.
In addition to his parents, wife Arlene and her parents Henry and Cecile Bradshaw, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary and Graydon Patrick, sister-in-law Alene Bradshaw and brother-in-law Gene Bradshaw.
A private service will be held by the family with burial at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
