Omar Pitts

October 12, 1933 — February 19, 2023

Omar Pitts, 89, of Fairhope, Alabama passed away after a brief illness on February 19, 2023 surrounded by his family.

Omar was born October 12, 1933, in Knightstown, Indiana and went to Spiceland High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War Era, and after leaving the Army, married the love of his life, Donna, in 1959. They were married for 56 years until she passed away in 2016.

Omar worked for Western Electric for most of his career as a skilled Tool & Die Maker, which eventually lead them to Shreveport, Louisiana in the 1960’s. They were members of Christ United Methodist Church and were very involved with their church for several decades. With his family, he enjoyed traveling, golfing, boating, fishing, camping, and were also avid square dancers (and wore ALL the crazy outfits!)

He loved his family dearly and absolutely TREASURED his two grandchildren, Tyler and Kaitlyn. He and Donna spent a lot of time at Lake O’ the Pines in east Texas with the grandchildren where they enjoyed camping, “helping” Grandpa drive the boat, roasting marshmallows by the fire, and taking nature walks for which they have many fond memories. Omar enjoyed going to his grandkids’ sporting events and never missed a game! Omar and Donna moved a few times to be closer to their grandchildren, including Colorado Springs and Poquoson, Virginia where they found a new church home at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. After his son Eric passed away in 2020, Omar moved from Virginia to Waco, Texas to be near family and eventually ended up in Fairhope, Alabama where he lived next to his sister Norma.

Omar would ask Tyler and Kaitlyn this question EVERY TIME HE SAW THEM “Have you done everything right today?”. No one would ever need to ask this of Omar. He was a devout Christian, a kind soul who was generous and always thought of others before himself, a loving husband, a father whose son looked up to and emulated him with the raising of his own family, and the best Grandpa anyone could have ever asked for. He was a true example of “doing everything right.”

He is survived by his grandson, Tyler Pitts; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Pitts; daughter-in-law, Kim Pitts; sister, Norma Pitts Beaver and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Donna Bell Pitts; his only, son Eric Omar Pitts; parents, Chester and Maggie Pitts; brother, Randall Pitts; sister-in-law, Patsy; sister, Eleanor Pitts Keck; brother-in-law, Don and brother-in-law, Roy Beaver.

Many thanks to the staff at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle for assisting with his final arrangements, and to pastor Steve Disbro for officiating his service.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 2 at 2:00 pm at Lewisville Cemetery in Lewisville, Indiana where his final resting place will be next to his wife Donna.
