Phyllis R. Cooney

Phyllis R. Cooney, 98, of Knightstown, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Glen Oaks Health Campus. She was born October 13, 1918 in Rossville, Indiana, to the late Floyd and Margaret Ann (Lyons) Shafer.

A 1936 graduate of Knightstown High School, she was a longtime member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church, and was very active in the Eastern Star and White Shrine. During World War II, she worked at Eli Lilly, making penicillin. Very active in Henry County politics, she was a mainstay in the Republican Party. Among the hobbies she enjoyed was quilting and knitting, but she most enjoyed family gatherings, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Darrel Cooney (Vickie Akers) of New Castle; her daughter, Rheta (Tom) Eversman of Jonesboro; one granddaughter, Cynthia Anne (Robert) Lenz of New Castle; four great grandchildren, Leslie Lenz, Tiffany Owens, Misty Lenz, and Cassidy Cooney; three great-great grandchildren, Robert Huesman, Alexis Smith, and Logan Owens. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph C. Cooney in 2005, and a grandson, Scott Cooney in 2015.

Services will be Monday, December 26, 2016 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with Rev. Danny Tompkins officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Knightstown American Legion, Knightstown United Methodist Church, or the Knightstown Library.
