Ray M. Hinton, 91, of New Castle finished his race on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 2, 1928 in Haldeman, Kentucky to the late Dennis Arthur and Rossa Myrtle (Jennings) Hinton.
Ray married the love of his life, Ermon (Carter) Hinton on May 6, 1950. Ray was a devoted member of the North 14th Street Church of God, where his father was one of the founding pastors. Ray proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a radio operator sending and receiving Morse code to pilots in the South Pacific Theater. He spent his career with Chrysler Corp. until his retirement in 1986 and after retirement worked for Citizens State Bank for over 17 years.
Ray enjoyed many things in life. He was said to be a “jack of all trades and a master of all”. He handmade for each child, grandchild and great grandchild, a specifically designed hope chest for them. He loved restoring old cars and his favorite was the 1953 Hudson Hornet that he restored to original form in less than a year by himself. Holidays with Ray were always something special. Memorial Day and 4th of July, he always brought his homemade ice cream maker and made sure to explain how it worked and let everyone have their turn cranking. His family said he was a “quiet” jokester. He enjoyed telling his grandkids and great grandkids all of the stories about his time in the service, growing up in the depression and just simply lessons of life. He was devoted to God and every morning he and his wife, Ermon, would sit and read the Bible to each other and discuss the contents. But more than any of this, he enjoyed spending time with his precious family, who he loved dearly.
Left to cherish Ray’s memory are his wife of 69 years, Ermon Hinton; daughter, Shalinda (Danny) Silvers; grandchildren, Kristi Hinton, April Stallings, Jason (Carla) Silvers, Josh (Charity) Silvers, great grandchildren, Dani Garner, Jakob, Jesse Dishmon, Haley, Bryce, Olivia, Drew, Carter, Nash Silvers, and Makenzi and Makenna Stallings; 6 great-great grandchildren; brother, Claude (Elaine) Hinton and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Dennis Ray Hinton in Vietnam and grandson, Joseph “Joey” Silvers.
