Robert O'Brien

Reverend Robert E. O’Brien, 88, of Mt. Summit, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born March 13, 1922 in Dennison, Iowa, the son of James Elmer and Rose Nevada (Baird) O’Brien.

Robert graduated from high school in 1939 in Bruceville, IL, and attended Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, TN. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Indiana University, and also earned M.A. Degrees in Education and Social Work, both from Central Michigan University. Rev. O’Brien had pastored several churches in Indiana, Michigan, South Carolina and Illinois. He taught in public schools in Clio, MI and Chesaning, MI where he also served as assistant principal. He served as instructor and Dean of Students at Palmer College in Charleston, SC, and served as instructor at Baker College in Flint, MI.

He served as chaplain for the Police Departments in Mt. Sterling, IL and Flint, MI. While living in Bonita Springs, FL, he coordinated the Meals on Wheels Program there. He was a Rotarian and member of the Lion’s Club for many years.

He leaves to cherish his memory, six children: Kathleen (husband, Tom) Turk of Owosso, MI, Timothy (wife, Jan) O’Brien of Flint, MI, Sharon O’Brien of Niles, MI, Laurie (husband, Gary) Grooms of Jenison, MI, Nora (husband, York) Lynch of Bonita Springs, FL, and Reverend Mark R. O’Brien of Mt. Summit, IN; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn in 1992, to whom he was married for forty-seven years; his second wife, Edna in 2000; a son-in-law, Charles Wisenbaugh, and a granddaughter-in-law, Bridget Grooms.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2010 at the Unity Christian Church in Swartz Creek, Michigan officiated by the Rev. Dr. John Lacey and assisted by Dr. Dean Garrison. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Hill Funeral Home in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Burial will be in Easton Cemetery in New Haven Township, Michigan at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to the Mt. Summit Christian Church, P.O. Box 310, Mt. Summit, IN 47361. A Memorial Service at Mt. Summit Christian Church will be announced at a later date.
