Robert E. Stokes, 80, of New Castle passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at his home. He was born July 2, 1928 in Henry County the son of Noble and Mary Stokes.
A 1946 graduate of New Castle High School, he was a teamster truck driver for Brooks Foods for 23 years and later owned and operated his own truck for 10 years. He was a race car driver in the early roadster days with the Mutual Racing Association, later driving and owning sprint cars in IMCA and USAC. He was winner of the Roaring Roadster National Championship 100 mile race at Winchester on September 7, 1953. He was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.
He is survived by sons: Mike (wife: Darlene) Stokes of Greensburg; Jim (wife: Rhonda) Stokes of Hagerstown; four grandchildren: Brandi, Lindsay, Kelli and Daniel; great grandson: Wyatt: four great grandchildren: Shanda, Emma, Makenna and Makeya; sister: Edna (husband: Don) Higbee; brother-in-law: Bill (wife: Mary) Fredenburg.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years: Corinne Stokes; her parents: Arthur and Hazel Fredenburg; a brother: Noble Stokes, Jr.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Ruth Waite officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Summit Cemetery. Friends may call from 11-1 PM Saturday prior to the service. Online condolences may be made at
