Robert L. Winters

April 8, 1932 — September 24, 2012

Robert L. Winters, 80, of Carthage passed Monday, September 24, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 8, 1932 in Greensfork a son of Clifford Alma and Marjorie (Wickersham) Winters.

He was a self employed Public Accountant who began building his practice in Carthage in 1959 known then as “Winters Accounting Service”. He retired in April of 2011 extremely proud to be second in the line of four generations of accountants.

He graduated from Connersville High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a naval photographer. He was a member of the Fletcher United Methodist Church in Carthage where he has served as a Sunday School teacher, Superintendent and as a certified lay speaker. Robert had been Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, a member of Shriners, past president of the Lions Club, a School Board and Town Board member.

He served as a Boy Scout Leader and Commissioner. He was past president of the Knightstown Optimist Club and the East Central Chapter of Public Accountants. He served as Chairman of the Carthage Fall Festival. He was an avid fisherman and woodworker, but most of all he enjoyed traveling and antiquing with his wife, Evie.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years: Evelyn (Shields) Winters of Carthage; children: Ric A. (wife, Diane) Winters of Carthage, Rob C. (wife, Jennifer) Winters of Carthage, Ron L. (wife, Marla) Winters of Rushville, Diana L. (Mark) White of Carthage; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sisters: Charlene Joy Smith and Debra Smith of Utah; brother: Gary Davis of Texas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Darrel Davis.

Services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Fletcher United Methodist Church, 205 N East Street in Carthage, with Reverend Roger Campbell officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 152 and an active duty contingent of the U.S. Navy. Burial will follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Friday, September 28 at Fletcher United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert L. Winters Scholarship Fund through the Rush County Community Foundation, Inc. 117 N. Main Street, Rushville, IN 46173 to be awarded to a graduating high school student pursuing an accounting or business degree. Envelopes will be available at the church.
