Royce DeWayne Mathews

Royce DeWayne Mathews, age 81, of New Castle, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 16, 1943 in New Castle to the late Rolland and Vera (Powers) Mathews.

A proud Mooreland Alumni, Royce was a 1961 graduate of Mooreland High School, Royce went on to work for Dana Corp for 30 years until his retirement in 1996. He was a fan of southern gospel music and a dedicated member of the Grace Baptist Church, remaining faithful to the end. Royce was an avid bowler, playing in several leagues and also coached bowling. He coached and played softball and was a huge sports fan, cheering for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and the IU Hoosiers. More than anything, Royce loved attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting and other activities.

Royce is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elaine (Houser) Mathews, whom he married July 9, 1963; two daughters, Kim (Roland) Martin of Sulphur Springs and Diana (Jeff) Chesher of New Castle; grandchildren, Kaleigh (Nathan) Waters and Katie (Trent) Goforth, both of New Castle, Kyle (Sarah) Martin of Muncie; step-grandson, Jeremy (Lora) Chesher of Mooreland; great-grandchildren, Lexi and Levi Waters, Ethan, Austin, and Harper Goforth; step-great grandchildren, Elisabeth (Clayton) Rose, Annalyn (Andrew) Graham and Jaycie Chesher; four step-great-great-grandchildren with one on the way; several nieces, nephews and in-laws and special friends of nearly 50 years, Steve and Casteen McCall.

In addition to his parents, Royce was preceded in death by his siblings, Helen Bernice Cleveland, Don Mathews, Owen Dale “OD” Mathews, Forry Mathews and Ernie Mathews; two grandsons, Douglas and Cody Martin; step-grandson, Jason Chesher and a special friend, Fil Manifold.

Services for Royce will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Grace Baptist Church in New Castle with Pastor Brian Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 3:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday, September 4 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle and one hour prior to the service at the church.
