Rufus F. Adkins, 89, of Greensboro, passed away Monday, September 12, 2011 at Hickory Creek in New Castle. He was born September 1, 1922 in Upper Tygart, KY the son of Elliott and Dicie (Hill) Adkins.

Rufus had lived in the Greensboro area since the mid 60’s. He retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1978 following 31 years of service as a set up man. He had also farmed.

Rufus was veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII and served in the European Theatre, where he earned a purple heart. He was also a proud member of American Legion Post #152. He formerly attended the North 14th Church of God in New Castle. Rufus loved to hunt and was an avid coon hunter.

He is survived by five children: Barbara (husband, Donald, Sr.) Dalton of Greensboro; Marvin (wife, Cindy) Adkins of Knightstown; Larry (wife, Mary) Adkins of Greensboro; Gary Adkins of Monticello, KY; Marlena (husband, Dennis) Adkins of Knightstown; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Delcie Mae Adkins in 2008; his son: Danny Ray Adkins; grandson: Christopher Adkins; great grandson: Charles Adkins; eight brothers and sisters: Vinnie Hill, Anthony Adkins, Russell Adkins, Hobert Adkins, William Adkins, Raymond Adkins, Okie Adkins and Lillian Adkins.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Reverend Elwood Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until time of service on Friday. Mr. Adkins had requested his casket be closed to public viewing. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #152.
