Ruth M. Calhoun, age 94, of New Castle, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at The Waters of New Castle. She was born January 6, 1920 in Henry County, Indiana to the late William J. and Viola (Porter) Sparks.
A homemaker, she was a lifelong resident of Henry County. Ruth was the oldest living member of First Church of the Nazarene for the past 81 years. She had taught Sunday school, served as a board member, missionary president, helped with funeral dinners and was active with the Joy Club. She was also honored as “Mother of the Year”. Ruth loved flowers and working in the yard, reading her Bible and especially enjoyed caring for her dog, Buffy. She loved her family dearly and to know her was to love her.
Survivors include her daughter, Jerrilyn Calhoun of New Castle; sister, Billie Jean Holcomb of New Castle; sister-in-law, Mary Rose Sparks of New Castle; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; step grandson, Steve (Peggy) Todd of Noblesville; special friends, Rusty and Marta Davis, Garon, Amber, and Solomon Davis and Kirk Davis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Calhoun in 1986; infant son, Raymond Harold Calhoun; three brothers, Joseph, Lloyd and Robert Sparks; two sisters, Elsie Crowley and Edna Sparks; nephew, Michael Crowley; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Eula (George) Todd.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastors Danny Goddard and Norwood Kreuzinger officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the funeral home.
