Ruth Sturgell Cox

August 14, 1917 — April 11, 2011

Ruth Sturgell Cox, 93, of New Castle went to be with her Lord in Heaven Monday, April 11, 2011 with her family by her side. She was born August 14, 1917 in Haldeman, KY the daughter of Frank James and Evelyn (Mollie) Dingus Sturgell. She married Elmer Cox February 14, 1940 and resided in New Castle since 1943.

She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She loved flower gardening and had been known to say “Flowers are food for the soul.” She loved to read and had gone through many many books including The Bible twice. She was a marvelous cook and loved cooking for her entire family. Chicken and noodles, cornbread and pumpkin pies were her specialty, as well as her tradition of vegetable soup at Christmas. She was also an avid Pacer fan. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, to whom she was a great role model.

Ruth had worked at the Highlander Center Laundromat in New Castle and Men’s Town in New Castle. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was the last of eight children.

She is survived by her two loving children: David (wife: Barbara) Cox and Linda (husband: Mickie) Mann both of New Castle; six grandchildren: Julie (husband: Jim) Greenwood of New Castle, Alan (wife: Lisa) Cox of Fishers, Christy (partner: Andrea) Mann of Bellingham, WA, Michelle (husband: Tony) Stewart, Bret (wife: Mel) Mann and Bryan Mann all of New Castle; 12 grandchildren: Mitchell Smith, Mason Bogue, Courtney and Ashley Cox, Damon and Miles Mann, Spencer and Emilie Stewart, Gage and Brennan Mann, Gavin and Kaia Peterson-Mann; 3 step grandchildren; Jessica and Drew Stewart and Mike Greenwood; 2 sisters-in-law: Dorothy Sturgell Hurst of New Castle and Rae Fletcher of AZ; 2 brothers-in-law: Richard Miller of Indianapolis and Allen Cox of Morehead, KY; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years: Elmer Cox who passed away March 29, 1973; a great grandson: Aidan Joseph Peterson-Mann; twin great granddaughters; sisters: Ottie Tyner, Irene Wiles, and Nina Miller: brothers: Roy, Troy, Eugene and Raymond Sturgell.

Services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in New Castle with Reverend Jerry Ingalls officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Wednesday, April 13 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church 709 S. Memorial Drive New Castle, IN 47362.
