Sara Smith

Sara Jane Smith, 78, a resident of Mount Summit, died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after a brief illness. She was born July 18, 1931 in Henry County, a daughter of Lowell and Madge (Lawhorn) Beavers.

From preparing lunches for children at Blue River Valley Elementary School to most recently working as a caretaker for the elderly, Sara had a servant’s heart throughout her lifetime.

For 26 years she worked in the cafeteria of Blue River Valley Elementary School. For the past few years, she had served as a caretaker for people with serious illnesses or injuries. She had faithfully served the families of June Shively, Pauline Thornburg, Pauline Church and most recently helped Mary Phyllis Hayes. She also worked at Henry County Hospital and served as a clerk during Prairie Township elections. She was a member of the Mount Summit Christian Church and taught Sunday School classes to children there for many years.

Sara loved cooking for her family and the church, becoming well known for her unique pumpkin pies, potato salad and homemade ice cream, among other dishes. She enjoyed playing euchre and watching college basketball, especially Indiana University basketball and figure skating. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Tom, whom she married September 21, 1953, three children: John (wife: Cindy) Smith of Richmond, Becky (husband: Darrel) Radford and Jim (wife: Lisa) Smith, all of New Castle; six grandchildren: Scott (wife: Angela) Smith of Bloomington and Ryan (fiance’: Genna Adams) Smith of Richmond; Molly and Derek Radford of New Castle, Jeremy and Matthew Smith of Mt. Summit; one great-grandchild, Cooper Smith of Bloomington; two step-grandchildren, Austin and Teddi Perdue of New Castle; a sister, Mary Lou Wiatt of New Castle; a brother, Charles (wife: Nancy) Beavers of New Castle; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother-in-law: Leonard Wiatt.

Services will be at 11 am Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Mt. Summit Christian Church with Pastor Cheryl Garbe officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Summit Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 pm Friday, February 19, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt.
