Sarah M. Smith, age 100, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on Saturday, January 21, 2012. She was born September 2, 1911 in New Castle, a daughter of the late Charles W. and Lora (Rinehart) Young.
Sarah was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, had been a member of the Nazarene church since age 12. An excellent seamstress, a great cook, and a wonderful wife, mother and granmother. She read the Bible in its entirety every year until her eyesight prohibited it.
She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Guy T. Smith Jr. of Amarillo, TX; three daughters, Phyllis Hicks of Indianapolis, Bernice (husband, Levi) Shelton of Spiceland, and Debra (husband, Bill) Eden of Kokomo; fourteen grandchildren, Marcia Adkins, James (wife, Cindy) Hicks, and Ross (wife, Judy) Hicks, all of Indianapolis; Sam (wife, Carol) Hicks of VA, Tony New of Anderson, Tracey New of Orlando, FL, Rev. Rick (wife, Sandra) Shelton of Knoxville, TN, Nancy (husband, Terry) Jackson of New Castle, Larry (wife, Janiece) Smith and Greg (wife, Cindy) Smith, both of Amarillo, TX, Jerry Smith of Ft. Worth, TX, Karen (husband, Mike) Wiley of Charlotte, NC, Heather Eden and Shawna (husband, Matt) Eden Lewis, both of Kokomo; twenty-two great grandchildren and sixteen great-great grandchildren; a sister, Glenna Kolodziej of New Castle; one brother, Joseph (wife, Viola) Young of Orlando, FL; several nieces and nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy T. Smith in 1993; daughter, Rosemary New in 1992; and infant son, William Smith at birth; a daughter in law, Arlene Smith and a son in law, James W. Hicks; grandchildren, Charles “Chuckie” Hicks, Andy Smith, and John Timothy Shelton; two brothers, David Wilson Young and Albert Young.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with the Reverends Rick Shelton, Leon Davis and Danny Goddard officiating.
