Shelby Gene Coffey Went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The son of Elijah (Lige) and Dorothy (Choate) Coffey, he was born in Monticello, Kentucky on February 18, 1940. Shelby married Frances (Beck) Mercer in 1966 who preceded him in death in 1993. He is also preceded in death by special friend, Norma Hartman, the love of his life in 2018.
As a teenager, Shelby moved with his family to New Castle, Indiana where he was employed by Criders, Rays and Howards Drive-Ins. As a young adult, he honorably served his country through the National Guard and the United States Navy. After service he returned to New Castle and was employed for a time by Chrysler Corporation. He then moved to Muncie, Indiana where he held a variety of jobs including ABC and Trailways Bus Lines and Delaware Trucking. Finally, he settled with Schneider Trucking Company which ended up being his favorite as he could drive nationwide. He retired in 1989 for medical reasons with over two million safe driving miles and was a lifetime member of Teamsters Local 135.
Shelby is survived by brother, Mack (Diana) Coffey of Monticello, Kentucky; sister, Jane Dickson of New Castle, Indiana, Mary (Bob) Richards of Frankfort, Indiana; several nieces and nephews; special family members, Debbie (Mark) Risser, Janie (Verney) Scheiber and their families, whom he thought of as his own.
In addition to his parents and spouse, Shelby was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Kenny; sisters-in-law, Betty Sue and Sharon; brother-in-law, Jack Dickson.
Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 22, 2024 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories in Muncie, Indiana.
