Sheryl J. “Sherry” (Charlton) Alley, 57, passed away Monday, February 9, 2009, at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis following a brief illness. She was born September 7, 1951 in New Castle the daughter of Richard and Eileen (Huffman) Charlton.

Sherry was an accounting instructor at Ball State University for 30 years, held a Masters degree in Accounting and was a CPA. She was a caring person who enjoyed visiting family and church members in nursing homes and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. She loved clogging, supporting local theater and New Castle athletics, and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She was a member of Foursquare Gospel Church.

She is survived by her husband: Don Alley of New Castle; a daughter: Heather (husband: Jake) Selph of Papillion, NE; mother: Eileen Charlton of New Castle; brothers: Steven (wife: Sue) Charlton of Columbus; Bill (wife: Marilyn) Charlton of Indianapolis; sister: Rosalie (husband: Danny) Earnest of Spiceland; grandchildren: Bradley and Zachary Selph of Papillion, NE; Carson and Carter Smith of Indianapolis; son-in-law: Chris Smith of Indianapolis; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father: Richard Charlton; and daughter: Cara Lynn Smith.

Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, February 13, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Lynn Furrow officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Thursday, February 12, 2009. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sherry Alley Memorial Fund at the Ameriana Bank with envelopes available at the funeral home. Funds will go exclusively to fight anaplastic thyroid cancer.
