Shirley Raines, 73, of New Castle, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 29, 2024, surrounded by her family and friends, following a courageous battle with AML Leukemia.
Shirley retired from New Castle Community Schools food service after 34 years of service. She was a member of South Memorial Drive Church of God. Shirley loved spending time with her friends and family. She enjoyed cooking and baking for others. Shirley loved making candy at Christmas and was always sharing with others. She was a collector of Coca Cola memorabilia and porcelain dolls. Shirley loved making her yard look good during the spring and summer months and was very proud of her rose bushes.
Shirley was a strong-willed independent woman who loved to laugh and have fun. She loved to make people laugh. Shirley had several friends who were more like sisters to her as she only had brothers.
Shirley is survived by her children, Jimmy (Karen) Raines of New Castle, Jonie (Kim) Hursh of New Castle; grandchildren, Wesley (Lauren) Raines of Merrill, WI, Maegan Raines of Indianapolis, Lucas Raines of Knightstown; great-grandchildren, Connor and Liam Raines of Merrill, WI; brother, Jimmy (Vanessa) Slavey of New Castle; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Stephen Wolfe; friends like sisters "Golden Girls," Ina Roberts, Helen Johnson and late Nina Faye; special friends, Cindy Cross and Sheila Ball.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Virginia (Stephens) Slavey; husband of 48 years, Leamon Raines in 2012; brothers, Roscoe T. Slavey and Robert Slavey; niece, Kim Custer; nephew, Chester Slavey.
Services will be at Hinsey Brown Funeral Service in New Castle on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Jeanette Flynn officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Summit Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
