Shirley Ann Whitfield

Shirley Ann Whitfield, 79, of Carthage passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born August 9, 1933 in Huntington, IN and was the daughter of Clayton and Velma (Bennett) Todd, both are deceased. She married Robert Leon Whitfield on January 19, 1952 and he survives.

Shirley moved to Carthage at the age of 8 and lived there the rest of her life. She worked 8 years at Carthage Radio & Appliance Shop and 28 years at Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home near Knightstown. Her hobbies were baking and decorating cakes, catering for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries.

In addition to her husband, she leaves behind two daughters: Patia (husband, David) Ertel, Theresa (husband, Terry) Speer, and one son: Gregory (wife, Andrea) Whitfield. Nine grandchildren: Danielle Wilson, Christina Porter, Sarah McCoy, Melisa Speer, Jason Speer, Tasha DeFelice, Tonya Mason, Courtney Whitfield, Connor Whitfield, and fourteen great grandchildren; a brother: Kenneth (wife, Edith) Todd of Knightstown; two sisters: Betty (Robert) Dean of Knightstown, Sharon (Thomas) Roberts of Carthage; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers: Robert Todd of Anderson, William Todd of Indianapolis, three sisters: Donna Brooks-Hiner of Kennard, Frances DeWitt of Carthage and Patricia DeWitt of Rushville.

Services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, February 25, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Reverend Ron DeWitt officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery near Carthage. Friends may call from 1:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday. As a breast cancer survivor, the family requests memorial contribution be made to Susan G.
