Stephen Phelps

Stephen “Steve” John Phelps, 63, of Spiceland, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born December 27, 1946 in New Castle, the son of John Oscar and Nola (Armstrong) Phelps.

Steve retired from Delphi Corporation (Delco Remy) in Anderson following 34 years of service. He loved to play country and bluegrass music playing both guitar and banjo. He enjoyed building guitars, singing, woodworking and carving. Steve was an outdoorsman and enjoyed working (playing) on the tractor. He was the best father and papaw in the world and loved his family very much.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 40 years: Helen (Buck) Phelps of Spiceland; children: Shane (wife: Carol) Phelps of Lewisville, Juli Phelps of Indianapolis, Dusty Phelps of Indianapolis; grandchildren: Masen and Averi Phelps both of Lewisville; sister: Carolyn (husband: Gordon) Riddle of Mt. Summit; two nieces: Jennifer (husband: Brandon) McQuiddy of Murfreesboro, TN, Heather (husband: Fredrick) Hampton of Indianapolis; two nephews: Greg (wife: Kathy) Riddle of Hanover, MN, Travis (wife: Cassie) Mummert of Shelbyville; brothers-in-law: Bill (wife: Brenda) Buck of Knightstown, Keith (wife: Carrie) Buck of Dunreith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law: Karen Mummert; brother: Ronald Phelps; mother-in-law: Ruby Buck.

Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, April 2, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Mark O’Brien officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Thursday, April 1, 2010.
