Thomas "Tom" L. Helms

Thomas “Tom” Lee Helms, 73, of New Castle, IN passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023 peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on September 26, 1950 in Knoxville, TN, a son of the late Jack and Mildred (Cagley) Helms.
He attended Blue River High School and was a 1968 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School. Tom was a veteran of the United States Navy from 1969-1970 serving during the Vietnam War. He married the love of his life, Brenda Murray, on July 6, 1975. Over the years, Tom was employed by Modern Fold and Chrysler Corp. Tom found his career with the State of Indiana Correctional Department where he served for 27 years and retired in 2009 as a Correctional Sergeant. He loved spending time outdoors especially during warm weather. Tom enjoyed spending time with his friends and neighbors; he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Most importantly, Tom loved spending time with his family, especially his 2 grandsons, Noah and Nehemiah. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Brenda (Murray) Helms of New Castle; son, Bradley Allen (Melanie) Helms of New Castle; grandsons, Noah and Nehemiah Helms of New Castle; brother, Steve Helms of New Castle; sister-in-law, Faye Pharis of Burkesville, KY; brother-in-law, Larry Murray of Burkesville, KY; sisters-in-law, Tammy Hall, Pam Branham, Sharron Murray all of Burkesville, KY; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and an uncle.
In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his sister, Betty Helms; father and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Robbie Murray; brothers-in-law, David, Steve and Jerry Murray.
Services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 11:00am at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Jack Bimber officiating. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery with military honors conducted by the New Castle American Legion/VFW and the US Navy. Visitation will be on Sunday, December 3, 2023 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm as well as one hour prior to the service on Monday.
