Vera Belle Massengale, 85, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at her residence. She was born December 8, 1934 in Wayne County, Kentucky to the late Joe Dell and Edith (Kennedy) Lester.
Vera graduated from Wayne County High School and later earned her Associate Degree from Cumberland College. She worked for 25 years for Charles A. Beard School Corporation at Kennard and Knightstown Elementary School’s as a teacher’s aid. She loved helping teach the children and impacted many lives.
In 1974, Vera survived the historic Kennard tornado. She was a longtime member of Greensboro United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir and treasurer of the G.U.M.C. Women’s Group. She enjoyed gardening and canning, watching soap operas, but more than anything, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. For the last two years, her granddaughter, Jennifer, moved to New Castle and was her caretaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Freda (Mark) Dalton-Lake of Knightstown, and Sandy Bogue (Jerry Lantz) of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Jennifer Dalton of New Castle, Ross (Brittney) Dalton of Brownsburg; Tiffany Bogue (Ross Raglin) of New Castle, and Brandon Bogue (Amber Wilson) of Greenfield; three great grandchildren, Elianah Dalton, Paxton Jay Bogue, and Annabelle Dalton; siblings, Joyce (Earl) Rains of New Castle, Bill (Gayle) Lester of Spiceland and several nieces.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, JW Massengale.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2019 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Bob Lines and Jack Bimber officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 at the funeral home.
