Wallace Richardson

Wallace O. Richardson, 90, of Franklin, passed away Monday, November 1, 2010 at Johnson Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born February 6, 1920 in Russell Springs, KY, a son of the late Harrison Finley and Flora Belle (Meece) Richardson.

An auctioneer for many years, Wally was licensed in five states. He had also owned and operated the Elmwood Cab Company in Cincinnati until he entered the U. S. Army in 1944. A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, he was in the Battle at Normandy and Omaha Beach in France, and later in the Battle of the Bulge, then crossed the Rohr River into Aachen, Germany, then crossed the Rhine River into Remahgen, Germany. After being seriously wounded, he spent the remainder of the war in the 54th General Hospital in Paris, France.

He was a member of the Whiteland Missionary Baptist Church where he had served as song leader. A gospel singer, Wally sang at different churches, senior centers, and nursing homes. He was an honorary member of the Franklin Senior Center. A member of the VFW since 1948, he helped organize the VFW Post #5864 in Greenwood in 1976 and was All State Commander in 1980-1981. After moving to Florida in 1983, he was elected District 19 All State and All American District Commander of Florida. He was also a life member of the Past Commander Club of the United States VFW.

He is survived by a daughter, Wanda G. (husband, Jim) Rhoten of Greenwood, grandchildren, Gloria (husband, Russell) Schaub of Greenwood, Larry Johnson of FL, Mitch (wife, Lynn) Johnson of Greenwood, and Cindy (husband, Kevin) Brown of New Castle; great grandchildren, Garry Robertson, Gloria Winings, Gena Robertson, Cory Johnson, Nikki and Cody Johnson, Shelby and Brittney Johnson, Evan and Olivia Brown, , Aleigha, Paige, R.J., and Kailey Schaub; great-great grandchildren, Micah and Morgan Robertson, Felicity and Kelcee Winings, Kayden Wade and Zoey Johnson; a sister, Clotine Scheffell of Apolochiola, FL.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores (Deaton) Richardson in 1998; brothers, Osa Lee and Robert F. Richardson; sisters, Eula Mae Wade, Rosella Hadley.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home on State Road 135 in Greenwood with Reverends Ed Tharpe and James Archey Strong officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the VFW Post #5864, 333 S.
