Waneta Johnson, 86, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013 following a brief illness. She was born March 2, 1927 in Bluffton, Indiana to the late Joe and Aletha (Fosnight) Eckrote.
One of eleven siblings, she graduated from Mt. Summit High School in 1945. A 48 year employee of the banking industry, she worked at Citizen’s Federal Savings and Loan and later retired from Ameriana Bank in 2001. Waneta was a two time cancer survivor who always put others before herself. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her son, Mark (wife, Linda) Johnson; grandson, Scott (wife, Carrie) Johnson; great granddaughter, Natalie Johnson; a sister, Doris (husband, Richard) Johnson all of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Donald “Gene” Johnson to whom she was married for 52 years; 9 siblings, Geraldine Ray, Thelma Longwell, Imogene Caine, Donna Dean Hoagland, Dale Eckrote, James Robert Eckrote, Joe Eckrote Jr., Gerald Eckrote and Russell Eckrote.
Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, June 28, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Adriane Curtis officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from 5 – 8 PM Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
