Wilbur Lewis Cross

February 24, 1939 — March 30, 2025

New Castle

Wilbur Lewis Cross, 86, of New Castle passed away Sunday, March 30, 2025 at Henry Community Health. He was born February 24, 1939 in Hagerstown to the late Aubrey and Lucille (Favorite) Cross.

After graduating from New Castle Chrysler High School with the class of 1957, Wilbur started his career with Dana Corporation in New Castle. After a few months, he decided factory work wasn’t for him so he enrolled in Indiana Barber School. After barbering for 20 years, where he made many lifelong friends, he started building homes. Wilbur started his boys working with him and taught them the trade. In 1985, he joined the local union #232 in Ft. Wayne and continued to work until retirement. After Wilbur retired, he started building and remodeling again until he developed Parkinson Disease and then he officially retired.

Being of the Pentecostal faith, Wilbur loved the Lord. He also loved his family and all his many friends. He loved good gospel music and he listened every day on his ride around town. Wilbur and Sue would sing, and Sue introduced him to bluegrass gospel music which he grew to love. He often said that a good song was more of a blessing than the sermon.

Wilbur is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Sue (Madden) Cross; children, Tim (Robin) Cross, Tom Cross, Tracy (Lisa) Cross, Trent (Kathy) Cross and Leah Driver (Kip Sorell); grandchildren, Heather Frazier, Jade (Josh) Linville, Tomi (Nathan) Sauerhage, Sam Cross, Shania Cross, Jaylen Cross, Meghan (Chris) Ledbetter, Aaron (Alexis) Cross, Vince Guffey, Nolan (Teasia) Snyder, Chase (Tori) Hancock, Christin (Brandon) Hancock, Kyle Cross, Alana (Josh) Wheeler, April (Dave) Smith, Trey Driver and Seth Driver; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandsons, Trent Lee, Chad Michael and Brent Lee Cross; siblings, Margaret Jent, Jim Rhodus, Marilyn Bowman, Dean Cross, Linda Guffey and Leroy Cross.

Sue would like to say thank you to special friends, Bruce and Elana McCall, Tom and Carla Banner and Kip Sorell for all their help during this difficult journey.
